Frequently asked tire questions.

Considering tire services or upgrades for your vehicle? Check out these tire-related FAQs.

According to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, the life of an average tire lasts around 50,000 miles. However, tire wear expectations should always be considered with context to driving habits, conditions, vehicle type, etc.

Any new tire generally carries a treadwear warranty, which is measured in miles and is based on its engineering, technology and design. Some new tires may not carry a warranty at all or may be offered as low as 30,000 miles, while other tires will offer as much as a 60,000 – 80,000 mile treadwear warranty.

Many factors will have a significant impact on any tire’s life and may substantially shorten its life expectancy. Perform the following to properly maintain your tires:

1. Check your tire’s air pressure regularly and inflate them as needed.
2. Get your tires rotated regularly to avoid excessive wear, as front tires tend to wear faster due to the steering of the vehicle in addition to the weight of the engine.
3. Get your tires balanced when you notice an odd shake or bounce when driving.
4. Get your alignment checked once per year and perform alignment adjustments as needed.

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TMPS) is an electronic system in your vehicle that monitors your tire air pressure and alerts you when it is low. This system alerts you with a tire pressure light on your dashboard when a tire needs inflation.

To help consumers better understand tire safety, Congress passed the TREAD act, which requires most vehicles made after 2006 to be equipped with TPMS sensors.

Hybrid tires, also known as Rugged Terrain (R/T) or Hybrid Terrain tires, have larger tread voids than all-terrain tires, providing better off-road traction without the road noise of a Mud Terrain tread pattern.

In response to the desires of many truck, Jeep and off-road enthusiasts, a few different tire manufacturers decided to produce hybrid tires such as the Toyo Open Country R/T and the Nitto Ridge Grappler which have a quiet and comfortable ride while also maintaining aggressive styling.
